Tried it once and liked it. Plan to do more when we have more time (hopefully next year). Used to do a lot of coarse fishing, but haven't done much for the last few years.

Started recently and really enjoy it. Would be even better if I managed to catch something. But I started at the wrong time of year (July/August) and in a small, fast hill-fed river so I'm not disheartened.

As a North of the borderer - what is the legal on fishing at the sea (from the shore or in a boat) in England. Do you need a license?
What is the story with rivers?

For rivers in England (don't know about Wales, Scotland or Ireland) you need a rod license (I think you also need this to fish canals, lakes etc. but someone with more experience will be along soon no doubt).

The rivers round me are not freely available to fish - you need permissions from whoever owns the river/fishing rights. By joining my local angling club, I have permission to fly fish on lots of nice stretches of local rivers and also some course fishing sites too, should I wish.

Membership for a year was around 40 - a bargain, I reckon. Plus I am meeting a lot of experienced fly fishers. Fishing folk are really lovely people - so keen to share experience with you and always ready to stop and introduce themselves if they spot you are fishing.
