I am not sure where they are in the South Downs. From the looks of who funded it it is rather to the north. There are virtually no rivers on the Downs themselves but several flowing off them.

We don't have woodchuck in the UK, and never have, so they won't be 'reintroduced'. Good point about the scent glands though as it seems they were used for something in the past, but no idea what. Will have to look it up.
Seems the dried glands were used in perfume to give a 'leather' note, and in a particular type of schnapps. There is an interesting list of chemicals that it contains but some may evaporate in the drying and storing process.
