In flagrant breach of my "Buy Nothing New ..." regeme, I am thinking that we really really reallydo need to consider getting a new mattress.

But what is keeping me awake at night is worrying about what will happen to the old one.

The materials it is made of are all recyclable as far as I know. But when the bed delivery company take my old mattress away, where will it go? Landfill? Incineration?

They must have to deal with tens of mattresses every day. Surely they are not going to go to the trouble of reducing them all to their constituent materials. I wouldn't trust the bozos at the Council Depot to, either.

Perhaps I should refuse the collection service and "butcher" my old mattress myself, outside on my driveway, as part of my concerted campaign to totally alienate my posh neighbours Then take all the bits to the dump and put them in the right bins.

Has anyone done this?

If you really want to annoy them....burn it. Looks like not much is done: https://domino.lancs.ac.uk/info/lunews.nsf/I/BA921AF15741FCBB8025707A005563CC

Update. I phoned my local bed company. They told me that the mattresses they collect are taken to Weymouth and then tipped. So I phoned Weymouth council. They confirmed that the constituent parts of mattresses are not recovered in any way, they are simply sent to landfill.

What a crying shame.

DIY mattress butchery it is, then!

the padding may be compostable (wool /cotton etc).the metal can be refurnaced
gloves, a sharp knife and a pair of boltcroppers will sort it into manageable chunks
(same tools for cars )

the springs are not top grade metal but they are better than most ferrous scrap ,
do the sums
"the old mattress queen " its almost not worth the risk of it being a viable business

It's probably quite easy to come top of a google search for mattress butchery.

ooh-uh

we were going to get rid of our aged mattress when we move......

i wondered what would happen to it

we are in a position to burn it so that might be the best idea?

or at least take it apart and compost the innards, then burn the outside covering?

rolf likes a good bonfire

Why burn it, when you can put it in a rag bank to be reprocessed into industrial cleaning cloths etc? And the springs can go to the municipal tip and be put in the metal bin.
