A man has set up a stall in the lay-by down the road from me selling cherries and strawberries. On asking though he admitted that the cherries were from Italy although he said the strawberries were local. I had always assumed that these "local" sellers were selling their locally grown excess produce for a bit of "pocket money". I wonder how many people bought the cherries thinking they were local and how many such traders are in fact importing their fruit and veg?

I would love to pick my own but have no tree and there are no pick your own cherry farms that I know of (Health and Safety might be an issue). I know I will always ask for the provenance of produce if it is not clear - sadly the vast majority of the public do not.

I saw an advert a while ago for a cherry farm in Kent where you could 'buy' a tree (i.e. select a tree, pay whatever the sum was and then you get all of the cherries from that tree). Can't remember where it was but it would guarantee the where they came from.

Keep your eyes up looking at the trees... Cherry trees are really common, often planted 'cos the blossom is pretty, but that doesn't mean that the fruit aren't good.

Thanks Bebo and Cab - I will certainly keep a look out for cherries when out walking the hound. As for buying a cherry tree, it sounds like a good idea but I was wondering how they got the cherries to you (could be quite fuel consumming). Do cherries all ripen at the same time or do you need to pick them over a period of time? Plus it won't work for me as we are about to leave these shores to realise our downsizing dream in rural Normandy. Should be able to plant our own "cerise" tree then. I did however hear of a similar scheme where you buy a olive tree and then get the oil from it. That sounded more feasible as the end product isn't degradeable like the cherries.

I inherited a cherry tree on my new allotment - they are looking very big and fat at the moment!! Agree with cab though - loads of cherry trees all over the place round here, paticularly at a local park where there seems to be a mini-collection of them I seem to be the only person that bothers with them even though some are proper eating cherries - not ornamental!
