Currently I work full time plus run my own business. Year before last I did a full self assessment tax form, last year they only asked for a statement of extra earnings (can't remember what its called but its a single page where you say 'my PAYE was x my other earnings were Y come and look at the books if you feel inclined'). This year they havent sent me anything and I have phoned twice to ask why. They seem to want to assume I made the same as last year, and whilst it will be close (and we're not talking a lot of money here) I still think I should be declaring an actual figure rather than 'vaguely 2k' .

But no matter what I say to them, nothing comes throughth e post to fill in. What should I do? Should I send them a home made statement of accounts?

Normally the problem is them sending self assessment forms year after year when there's no need.

I don't suppose you can file one online? Last year I wasn't asked to file a self assessment but I needed to so I filed one online. In previous years I'd filed them online so had all the login details.

I'll doublecheck, I was under the impression that it didnt work unless you had a current log in, but I havent actually tried this year so will investigate that

My login has worked for years, ever since the system was set-up. You can also look at previous years statements so if your login doesn't work you should be able to reactivate it.

yep, that worked. thanks for that, will fill it in regardless, at least I know I've done things properly then even if they think I'm too small to bother with

It is the best way. technically its your responsibility to report income, not theirs to ask.

I blame the french.

Very good idea to do that Sally - my dad had the same problem a couple of years back - he earns a small post-retirement income from translating for West Mids police and the Home Office and they (IR) would not despite repeated requests by phone and email send him a form or even take him seriously but got very cross with him last year for not declaring his income the previous year
