dug up about half the jerusalem artichoke crop (finally)
dug up more tatties (only one row left now), and weeded where they were
harvested a parsnip and three swedes
cleared more dead vegetation / grass
attempted to kill some ivy
dug out some rogue rasp canes
cut down some brambles
raked out moss from stone dykes and beds

Trying to clear space so I can move the rosa spinossissima from the rotation plots to somewhere they can spread out and won't get in the way.

What have other folk been busy with in the garden / on the allotment / in seed trays etc ?

Productive day there, gil

Today we have:
Dug most of the of the veg garden, adding leaf mulch and compost ready to be top-dressed with the now well-rotted horse poo;
Cleared the pond of it's overgrown plants;
Put the watercress bucket back in the pond (that water is COLD);
Harvested the last of the parsnips and carrots and had the parsnips for tea (yumm);
refrained from pulling up the last of the fartichokes, will do that tomorrow;
Made a start on the veg plan for this year;
Watched Finding Nemo (again);
I'm now playing with the latest version of Flash (CS4) while we're watching Monty Hall's Great Escape.

Planted Jerusalem artichokes
Continued digging the veg patch
Moved 3 blackcurrant bushes
OH emptied out compost bin ready for using around the veg patch
Sowed lots of seeds in the Polytunnel - spinach, carrots, radish, turnips, beetroot, spring onions
Harvested parsnips and had them roasted with yorkshire puddings filled with ham, leeks and apple (cabbage on the side as well)

Got to carry on digging early in the week as rain is forecast for Wed.

Today I have:

Cleared dead leaves and other muck out of the pond (and yes, the water in our pond was very cold too)
Discovered large quantities of frog-spawn (or 'egg-frogs' as the Sherbling calls them) in the pond
Weeded out all the pots ready for whatever we decide to plant in them
Cleared dead leaves off, and weeded the patch of ground that singularly failed to produce any carrots last year

Only had sunday available.

Got down about 9

Dug in new pond
cleared out last years three sisters bed
pulled up the last of the carrots and weeded the last bit of the "harlow carr" 3x3
rotovated last years been bed
piled up all the junk from last year, stuffed it in a bin and then gave it to my father to drop off in a skip down the scout hall (we hired it for a clear out, it's being picked up today...)
tidied up the pot rack
cleared out the nature area and put the old logs and twigs by the new pond
built a cold frame from scaffolding boards.

and...

started planting!

I now have a tray of marigolds (or will do), autumn giants, french beans (in pots), cucumber variety 'burpless' (needs planting now??? definately felt wrong doing that!), elephant garlic in the 3x3 bed, along with (but not in the same place) broad beans bought about three years ago...

Also put some ornamental bulbs round the pond

Huzzah.

Got to 4:30, hadn't had a drink or any food, so went home to regroup.

Had friends to stay, so did a gloriously lazy nothing in the garden.
Otherwise:
Made a rather good chicken tagine using (some of) Cathryn's (many) preserved lemons (how did I end up with all of them?)
Drank beer
Swept the front step
Popped in to say hello to Rob (his daffodils are nearly in flower)
Drank some more beer
Cut up lots of bits of fabric for a quilt-in-progress
Watched Teulu on S4C for my Welsh homework

We have been having a competition to see which of us can be most poorly - I think Arvo must have picked something throat-related up at the hospital on Wednesday and generously passed it on to me . Hence, no bee visit, as felt it would be unsociable to pass it around to Mochyn and her Chap.

Instead:

Four chicks hatched - out of 36, very disappointed
Candled and then broke and examined 32 rotten eggs
Decided we need a new cockerel
Made cake and banana muffins
Lots of early nights

Seeds, lots of them:-

Rudbeckia
Leek
Basil
Tomato x 3
Chillis
Peppers
Parsnips (twice) dropped the tray and had to start again

Took cuttings of the clematis on the wall next door's builders are about to demolish

Rotavated last year's potato patch, played with chickens, went to see The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain (absolutely brilliant!!) investigated a new shed and went for a practise run for Race for Life, a fab weekend.
