Went looking for blackberries this weekend. And it was a successful blackberry hunt; we have our stone or so all sorted, the wine is on, some are stewed down with apples (wild ones, of which we picked a good 18lb) and in the freezer, the ice cream is made and the rest are to become jam, with some for soaking in whisky.

Also picked a rucksack full of plums (plum crumble, stewed for the freezer... More just to munch on, and maybe more chutney...), and some really late and lusciously ripe gooseberries. The first elderberries are ripe and there are also sloes ready

Found a few horse mushrooms, but very little else fungal

Tell me about it

On the plus side, it looks like I'll have a decent harvest of 'wild' (corporation planted) almonds this year. It's just bloody insane, isn't it?

Got any ideas for what to do with far too many plums?

Have you tried drying plums, to get prunes? Not to everyone's taste I know but I adore them. Just like big ol' raisins!

I've done that before, yes. Works well, but after drying damsons the other year nothing else has quite matched up.

Saw some Sloes today looking pretty much ripe, and also some Elderberries on the turn. But so far everywhere I have looked, Sloe are looking very disappointing in quanity.

I've been in quite a few different places over the last few weeks and it seems that side by side bushes are as variable as different locations. Some are loaded while others almost empty.

Nice to know there is some out there somewhere. I need a good 20lb preferably more.

It's early for sloes yet; you often find that they become more visible as they ripen.
