The screen on Jack's Lenovo laptop has broken (reason unknown). Is it possible to replace it? If so, would it be better to get someone to do it for us? Or should we muddle through ourselves?

The household is not a happy place at the moment

www.insidemylaptop.com/replace-broken-lcd-screen-lenovo-x60s-la..

Or this one?

When my Dell laptop screen needed replacing under guarantee the engineer did in about 20 minutes.

I watched him and I am sure I could have done it, would have taken longer though. And I would have taken photos as I went along and maybe even put labels for the screws in a bowl.

Do you know that it's the screen? Have you plugged it into a monitor to check that that's where the problem is? (If you have then sorry for asking patronizing questions.)

The questions aren't patronising Sean - I really appreciate it because I don't *do* IT at this level. So do I plug the laptop into my desktop hard drive?

Most laptops should have a connection where you plug the PC monitor cable into. So, just unplug monitor from your PC and plug in into the laptop.

ETC, like this: https://www.sciencephoto.com/media/349693/enlarge

Okay - we've done that and the laptop is definitely still working (*phew*) so it must be the screen. So far so good. I use two screens, so have given one to Jack to take into his room so he can at least use his laptop. The atmosphere has defrosted everso slightly now...

So, is it best that I take the laptop to work to get the screen fixed, or to one of the IT companies in town?

I don't know anything about fixing or replacing screens, although I'm sure people on here have done it.

Whatever you do, ensure *all* important files are backed up in case whoever works on it feels the need to delete/replace the hard disk (it happens). If you send it off I would see if you can keep the hard disk.

I don't fancy trying to do it myself - or Jack having a go for that matter.

Okay. Will do. That's kinda why I think it's best that I take it to the techies at work, who I know quite well.

It is relatively straightforward to do (ie, I have done it); so anyone with a bit of computer nouse should be able to manage it successfully. You can buy new whole-screen-and-lid bits or simply the new screen, which then needs to be seated in to the lid itself. I'd ask the IT people at work and see what they think - different models are different levels of complexity to do.

On two of my Lenovo laptops, the screen stopped working. It wasn't the screen itself, but the cable that went between the bottom of the laptop into the screen. On one, I simply unconstructed the screen (removed the plastic screen, hinge, etc), wiggled the wire, and back it came. The other one I think is the screen light itself, which is again fairly easy to replace. On mine, it ran along the bottom of the screen.

Do a google, and you've find instructions on how to do it. You'll have to do the steps in order to change the screen anyway, so you can check it as you are going along.

One tip ... when doing stuff like this, I use a digital camera and take a photo of every step. Lots of them. So I have a visual history of what I did and that can help when I put it all back together again.

Dunno about Lenovo but the Dell site and forums are *really* helpful. On my beloved 5 year old M90 I've replaced the DVD, the screen (twice), the keyboard and the graphics card! Often it is the cable between the screen and the rest of the machine as mustang said. Because it sits where the hinge is, it often takes a lot of hammer.

Do you know any friendly techies in college?

Yes, but you *get* computer stuff Chez - I don't. I can work on them, but have no idea how to take them apart
