Son came home with a bucket full of mackerel last night and that was after 'doing the relative round'. Caught from Slapton beach.

Quite a few being caught off South Cornwall along with some good pollack apparently. Must dust off my kit.

Hey guys There are millons down on the south east coast. But only if you can get your line out far enough. So with me being small with a medium rod i only caught 2 But my friend who was with me had a massive beach caster rod and probably borught in over 50 So the season has definatly begun

Where were you trying? I have been pondering heading to Dover in search of some mackeral, or maybe a day trip to Hastings, but don't want to waste the trip.

Hi Hugo I'd be interested in where you were fishing as well. I never have any luck sea fishing and would love to even catch two mackerel!

Hey Peeps
I go fishing in Dunggerness. If you go to Google maps and type in Dungerness you will see that it sort of sticks out from the coast line.
Zoom in on the point and you will sea the old dunggerness light house. To the left of the light house is the Dunggerness Nuclea Power Station. Still to the left of that you will see a small track/road.
Follow that back up to the main land because that is how i get down there. You will also see that the road forks off in two towards the sea. Make sure you you follow the right road coz if you follow the other you will probably get shot because it is a military training ground

It would be a good plan to bring a 4x4 or a high suspentioned vehicle because there are massive holes in the road.
And also when they are shooting in the range the beach is corrnored off with red flags so nobody gets shot.
As you drive down there you will see a sigh telling you when they are shooting.

OOOOOOOOPs Fogot to ask, can eney one tell me about garfish fishing i would love to give it a go BTW the mackrel were great. I had some smoked and i cooked a whole one with paprika buter and oil. Then i had some fried onions and tomatoes on the side. Best meal i have made in ages!

For those in the SE. Went to Samphire Hoe (between Dover and Folkstone) on Sat to see if my son was catching any Mackies. Was going to take a fly rod as reports were that the sea was boiling with them. Good job I didn't bother; 150 anglers and I saw 7 caught.

That being said it can fish brilliantly for Mackies when they are in. Pay your �2 parking fee and you have 2km of clean concrete wall to fish from. Bottom fishing very difficult for the inexperienced (including me) as the ground is very rough. However there are some great fish caught there.

Saw a number of garfish chasing the fry. I catch them by float fishing a mackerel or squid strip and ground baiting to get the fry feeding.

Garfish feed in the top 10 inches of the sea, so a float would be ideal, or a dexter wedge kept high on the retrieve.

Smoked garfish is fantastic.

Gar : Anglo saxon for spear, same word stem as Garlic, Gar leek or spear leek, cos of the shape of the cloves.

Had a single large mackeral off the kayak a fortnight ago down here Travelled up to Anglesey this last weekend and had 24 mackeral in 2 hours spinning off the rocks at Porthdafarch. Going to try again locally off Aberaeron in the kayak as soon as this wind dies down.

Went out for a fishing trip with a refugee family from Baghdad. Their first fishing trip ever.... Results: 1 broken rod 1 lost lure 1 extremely proud dad 1 mother in stitches 2 children caught on fishing 1 exhausted but pleased mihto 4 nice mackerel and 2 cod. Not bad for a first day

I'm off to Cornwall in a couple of hours for a long weekend and didn't know if we should take the feathering gear or not, is this a bit late in the year for them now? We're staying in Perranporth and don't know the area at all so is there anywhere that I might get lucky?

The Chicago Rock Cafe in Newquay is usually a good bet.

Probably best to talk to some of the locals, it's about 5 years since I was down there, everything might have changed since then!
