Can anyone tell me which fish these are please? They were in the estuary of a small river, swimming with the tide up stream but retreated back into the sea - about 30 cms/1 foot long. Shoals of 8-10 at a time. Thanks. Click to see full size image

I think that they're some sort of mullet.

Nice fish to catch...especially on a small gold head fly.

The Grayling would be a fresh water river fish and not really seen in estuaries. I would be more inclined to think they were grey mullet as they frequent estuaries and swim about in shoals. Quite difficult to catch as they don't take baits to readily. They can be caught on the fly and I do know a guy who catches them after pre baiting with bread flake and drifting a Bread fly over the shoal.

I've caught mullet on the fly, a good fight and a good meal. (but bass fight more and taste better!)

The dorsal fin's far too small for a grayling. Mullet.

Thin lip i think you will find, a nice piece of bread wrapped around the hook free line it and you will catch them all day. They are a lot easier to catch in the Med than here, I used to get buckets of them when i lived in Sardinia.
