... but ...

A friend of ours, who lives in France, wants to buy a 2nd hand full-powered air rifle.

Does anyone have one for sale, perchance?

Many thanks.

They're probably better asking around within their region as importing/exporting air rifles may be more hassle than it's worth.

I suspect that the regs on power and so on may well be different too. A decent gun shop will sell second hand kit as well as new stuff.

TBH, I think he wants to buy in the UK because they're so much more expensive 2nd hand in France.

Really? (I believe you, I'm just surprised. My impression's always been that more people shot in France than over here so I'd have assumed that the kit would have been cheaper over there. Supply and demand, economies of scale and all that.)

Edit: Thinking about it they seem more relaxed about people having real rifles, so maybe air-rifles are pricier because most people don't bother with one.

No, it's the French mentality that keeps 2nd hand prices higher for so many things. Take cars for example. New ones are slightly cheaper in France than the UK (well, they were a few years ago, so I'm guessing they still are) ... 2 years old or older, and they're WAY more expensive than the same age car in the UK.

It's the same with fire arms.

If he intends to shoot living things then I'm lead to believe this is illegal in France with an air rifle. Regulations differ across Europe so it would make sense for him to speak to a local gun dealer.

It is illegal to shoot anything alive with an air rifle in France. The regs are different, too - he'll need a licence to own even a low-powered air rifle. The flipside of that is that French air rifles come with fairly absurd powers as standard when you view the catalogues through English eyes!

Not sure how easy it is to import a UK air rifle. Wouldn't have thought it's too hard if you go through a gun club. An ex-colleague of mine shipped all his pistols to a gun club in France when the handgun ban came in - as he owned a yacht he'd nip over to the club at weekends (as you do!). He seemed find the process fairly hassle-free.

Thanks Shane, will pass the info on. I'm fairly sure he knows about not shooting anything live with it.

I have a full power air rifle for sale. It's a 24foot lb Air Arms. Spring loaded with side arm. It has a telescopic sight for it but that could do with remounting. It's a .22 and good for easily 50m against bunnies etc.
