A friend of mine is thinking about having a go at lobster fishing, but neither of us know too much. Obviously you need some lobster pots, a long rope and a buoy, oh and not forgetting a license, but other than that we're a bit in the dark. Any top tips from anyone?

Lobster pots are flippin heavy to haul up from the deeps by hand and also pretty expensive to lose on rocky lobster territory. You could try the 5 quid collapsible shrimp nets that work OK for lobster.

Also I don't think you need a license for recreational fishing, as long as you don't flog them. There may also be a limit to how many you can take. Depends on your local fisheries regs, which should be linked to in a handy sticky at the top of the page. Ahem.

An open bit of sea near rocky ground, works well. And don't put it near a commercial fisherman's pots. I niavely did so once and it ended up added to his own collection, with a different bouy added.

The sticky is out of date, but we're liaising with the relevant authority.

Most fishery areas require you to register & then send in returns of all catch numbers / species. Plus they have catch limits on number & size.

It seems a bit random to me. As far as I can understand the by-laws, you can take two from Cornish waters a day, more and you're a pro so you need a licence. There doesn't seem to be any limits to the number you can take in Devon waters though. I'll repeat, this is only as far as I can tell, there may be restrictions I've not found!
