And wandering thoroughly off topic, there must be "get ready for the end of the world" types in the UK, but they don't seem to be part of popular culture. As in I am aware of that sort of behaviour from people in the US, including the really serious ones with guns up in the hills, but not really in the UK. Presumably it happens.

As in end of the worlders seem to pop up in US crime drama as characters, but not in UK crime drama.

Or is it the same as hippies?

Or am I just not realising that is how Downsizers would be categorised in the US?

Oh and wandering even more off topic, there was an episode of "Have I Got News for You" a while back where they looked at the Sun (I think it was) Newspaper headline that the Queen ate her breakfast cereal out of tupperware.
And one of the panel said, "Eating out of tupperware, marrying your cousin, in the US you call them trailer trash."

There are many levels of preppers over here.

Some do have guns, and are a bit radical in their beliefs.

Mainly they believe that our government will fail at one point, and they will need to be self sufficient. TEOTWAWKI - The End Of The World As We Know It. Or a SHF - Sh*t Hits the Fan scenerio.

I do not consider myself a prepper, although, I do many of the same activities that they do, as trying to be as self sufficient as possible.

I think many downsizers would be considered as I consider myself, a homesteader. Just trying to make a go of it to be self reliant.

Not really sure we have folks like that in the UK, or not ones who advertise anyway - anyone in the UK run into folks like that?

That said, I'm not entirely convinced that the government won't fail, but there always seems to be something coming along so that the country continues to lurch onwards. Not entirely sure the government can be given credit, I often think it is because (nearly) everybody continues to do their jobs that it all works.

Just shifting back to the chicken waste issue.

Two of our chickens like to go in the chicken house at night and the other three go in the tree (although they like to lay in the house during the day).

They always roost in the same place so we have put a crate under their roost with hay in it to catch all the droppings as they sleep and poop. Periodically I gather it all up and dump it on the compost heap.

Can't bear to let all that poop go to waste!!

Daytime poop goes to the apple trees in the orchard where the hens live.

The chickens over fish pond idea seems to be a permaculture adaptation of mediaeval rotation system. Before the dissolution of the monasteries, abbeys often had fish ponds, which would be periodically drained and animals kept there instead.

That programme was shown here too. It was fascinating the lengths that family had gone to but I felt sorry for their very young children. They seemed to have no life apart from preparing for the end of the world as we know it. Also as the programme pointed out, once the s**t hit the fan they would be overcome by their neighbours seeking to steal everything as they were set up in the middle of a city and had no weapons to defend themselves with. The other families featured who had set up well stocked, isolated camps in wilderness areas plus escape plans to get to them seemed to have more of a chance of survival.

Exactly what we do - I take everything from work and have another couple of companies that save it for me - great till I move permantely down to Dorset then am going to have to look for another company who is happy to hand theres over!

We use it for both the Chickens and Ducks and works well - also great for composting - have read you need to leave for about a year till using.

Also if you have a farm/smallholding and live in a Nitrate Vunerable Area may need to be a little more careful.

If you have a wood burner (not coal no no) sifting the ash from it (to remove nails etc) into your compost bin with the chicken manure will act very much like lime and neutralise the acidity of the chicken manure. however the down side is you don't want to use this manure where you intend to plant potatoes as the potassium in the ash will encourage scab on your spuds also you will have to check the potassium levels in your soil 6 months after applying or just before the next time you feed the soil as too much potassium will effect plant take up of nutrients.but just as it does in humans, potassium regulates plants� water balance (so tissue is firm and juicy great for tomatoes), and has a part in transporting food within the plant and creating sugars and starches. Without enough, vegetables are more vulnerable to drought, frost, pests and diseases as always it's a balancing act hope this helps.
