I have some seeds I'd like to plant, only I'm a bit late. You see, I've got some pignut seeds, and some sweet cicely seeds. Both say on the packet that the seeds need several months exposure to cold to germinate them. I guess that means that I need to vernalise them.

Can I be a bit brutal with them, pot them in something small and put them in the fridge? Take them out in, say, April and allow them to germinate? Do they even need to be in the soil for that period?

You can put the seeds straight into the free (zed not working properly)er or the coldest part of the fridge for about 6 weeks; they don't need to be in compost, though, just in the packet. This has worked for me. Good luck with the sweet cicely - it's a bugger................

Sweet cicely is a bugger? What a shame, it's a great plant, and not something I find wild down here. What's the problem with it, is it a fussy germinator?

Cheers for the advice. I'll cycle off home and refrigerate some seeds

..... as you do!

Fussy germinator, yes.............If happy, though, when established it will self-seed around. You must talk to it and its plant deva though, ............

I'd much rather talk to a plant than a lot of people I know.

In fact, I do often talk to plants rather than a lot of people I know.
