We were fed wonderfully well last night at Penny and Steves

There was a few seconds though when my plate of meat was pushed to our end of the table, where I wondered if I had misheard as to whether this was for me, or for us all

I have been to one or two places where our hosts idea of a portion is my idea of a mouthfull and I hesitated here just a second before piling on the veggies

Anyone else been caught out or not as the case may be?

I eat a lot of salad, and once was served such a small portion, I assumed it was all for me (and a bit stingy at that), so I proceeded to dress it and eat it... it was only after a good few fork fulls I realised it was the salad for 4 people, and I should've passed the bowl on...

I'm with Nigella on this. 'Never knowingly undercatered'. But I've got an enormoys appetite, and I expect others to eat just as much.

If I'm going to eat somewhere where there isn't going to be a big portion, I eat before I go out. I'll confess to also sometimes keeping snickers bars in my coat pocket just in case I'm left hungry.

on those rare occassions when i entertain i try never to undercater but equally i try not to put people off by having too much which can be a bit off putting for some people

every once in a while i get it wrong at which point i call FHB and guests get the goodies and we get the gravy

An (ex)-friend came back from a holiday in Ireland some years ago, and complained bitterly about the "huge" portions served up. Bearing in mind these were dishes of veggies, potatoes etc that she could just help herself to (or not, as she chose), I never quite understood the basis of the complaint.

Anyone else find this a bit odd? Personally, I'm with everyone else; I'd much rather people were well fed than left hungry.
