Both of our e-mail accounts via MS Outlook are refusing to send/receive.

They come through different e-mail servers, so I don't think it is the server that is the problem (too much of a coincedence).

They stopped working late last night.

When I do a send/receive it eventually times out after 10 mins with the following error message.

Task 'mail.*********.com - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The operation timed out waitingn for a response from the receiving (POP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Oviously I'm not having any web problems, otherwise I couldn't post this.

Anybody got any ideas.

I have don various thorough virus scans etc. no problems other than one said that MS security and firewall had been disabled! Fixed that but still no joy!

Help, I must fix this by Tuesday as OH works form home.

Pete

I don't have much of an idea as I don't use outlook. If you google "error (0x8004210A)" you get quite a few results, the first from microsoft that suggests it could be an anti-virus software problem.

https://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813518&Product=ol2002

And if you look here it blames Norton AV (bottom of the page):

its probably your ISP's problem. just because they are different accounts, they still go through your ISP mail server. can you access your email via the web? there should be a webmail area at your ISP's website to do that.

When I said they are different accounts, our private mail come vie bt internet, OH's work one come from her work server.
Does this change what you said, or (more likely) have I still not understood the mechanics of e-mail servers and ISP's!!!

I am in no way a computer buff but did have similar problems to you when I didn't do my windows updates. It was something to do with service pack 2 not being compatible with norton but they did a patch for it to make it work.Make sure your updates are all up to date and try to get norton back on just in case.

'And after allllllllll.....it was the fiiiieeeeerrrrrrwaaaaaaalllllllll'

Deja vous, 'well thankyou very much Norton Internet Security'

I turned off Norton's Firewall.....email worked.

I turned on Window's Firewall...email worked.

I then tuned ON Norton's Firewall....email fell over again.

So I have turned it off...and am relying on Mr.Gates for my protection.

I still have the rest of Internet Security working away merrily.

Does anyone know how much more I am at rick by relying on Bill?

Still it is fixed now.....sort of....but far from being to my satisfaction.

Thanks everyone for pointing me in some helpfull directions.

No idea as I use a hardware firewall, but you can always turn on the Norton's firewall and check for emails when needed.

Glad you got it sorted. Reminds me of why I hate software security measures

It's not recommended. Try AVG, Avast, Panda, or any of the other free ones and bin Norton. As almost unanimously said in the earlier thread, it's rubbish.

OK, (duhh!) let's try recommending some actual firewalls rather than AVs ...

Kerio or ZoneAlarm are both good and have free versions.

Solution, bin the whole of Norton and your machine will run so much faster.

If you want a good all in one package then F-Secure takes some beating.

As a half way house just running XPfirewall which is as good as the freeware version of ZoneAlarm, the only reason XP firewall is not used in industry is that it's a pain in the arse to manage.

For trial versions of real AV products try https://www.two3five.com/virus/review.htm

Does the latest version of XP's firewall block outward connections? The first one didn't.
