such long mooring ropes...I realise that part of it is to allow for the tide.... boats at Ballantrae Harbour

Tho the Sun is out in SW Wales today.

It looks like a slipway that is quite shallow, so probably needed for low tide to stay afloat?

It might be because on a rough day the backwash from the piers meeting the incoming waves means that the safest place for a boat is a bit further out? Although the larger boat alongside the pier might not fare very well against the concrete. What sort of fetch is there to the right of the photo?

Thanks, crofter...we didn't stay long enough to see the tide go out! (South of Girvan, if anyone wondered )
