How do you go about stopping floorboards from squeaking, or making a noise please?

that depends are they just loose or are they warped or cracked If loose using a punch (peace of metal an old six inch nail ground flat at the tip will do) locate the nails and knock them back in a little deeper. If warped use screws either side of the board to pull it back down. if cracked simple answer replace the board.

I remember being advised to talc the offending board - literally with baby powder. I don't remember if it worked or not

Actually, I am not even sure if it is floorboards, or if it is shipboard sheeting, I haven't looked yet. Will it be the same?

effectively yes. unless its split where in you can cut out the offending strip an replace.

Better to use nails than screws, but if you must use screws use ones that have a non threaded shank length that equals the floor board thickness or it wont pull down tight properly.

Oh ok. I thought screws would hold it better. Normal nails, or ones with little ridges at the hitting end?

I point out all the squeaky floorboards to visiting boy and girl friends of daughter and sons You wont be able to miss them and I will hear any bedroom hopping

It is in the B&B. Unfortunately guests aren't missing them either!
