3/4 inch long

1/2 inch fat at the base. Totally triangular but with rounded bum . Blackish colour.

1/2 inch "proboscis - but not curved - simple straight "Lance"

Appeared to have two wings - set at 90 degrees and black leading edges. the rest could not be seen.

Hovering and landing on my sawdust pile. The wings and proboscis did NOT retract when it was landed !

WTF is it ?

Great to find this information - saw one in the garden on Tuesday - feeding off a primrose

The proboscis was very clear and the wings were just narrow blurred dark shimmers

Thank you - glad to know what it was; we have lots of bees - honey, miner, various bumbles - and the primroses are on the edge of my 'wild' area
