I need to buy some ear tags for my sheep, however I'm confused as to what I need. I have 3 ewes that I bought in about 4 years ago. They have tags in both ears (non electronic I think). When I sell these will I have to put another tag in each ear (one electronic and one not)?

I also have a ewe that was born on the holding and has one tag. When I sell her will I need to put one tag in each ear as above for her too?

When I sell the lambs I understand I will need one tag in each ear, one of which must be electronic?

Its the tagging of the ewes that has me most confused...

Pre 2010 animals with double tags are fine, 2010 & after need two tags, one of which must be electronic. The one with a single tag will need a replacement tag or retagging with an Eid & new number but record the number change in your record book. There's no need to put your own tags in unless you are replacing the originals.

But the pre 2010 animals don't have my tags in, they are the ones from the person I bought them from - don't they have to have my tags as well?

If I retag the one with a single tag is it ok to leave the one that's already there and just add the new ones so she has 2 tags in one ear and 1 in the other?

Its obvious I'm confused, isn't it

The sheep tagging rules are a right dogs dinner - it's not in the slightest bit simple.

You don't need to put any more tags in if they've got their original ones in. If you retag the one with a single tag you cut the old tag out.

What's the best tool to use to do this?

And you need to look at the colour of the replacement tags. May need to be red.

A pair of cable cutters/side cutters.
