Well I dared to go ahead with the free Windows 10 upgrade yesterday after putting it off for months (from WIndows 7 on laptop). It took a while to get started (I may have confused it be setting a start delay of a couple of hours and then clicking upgrade now).

After some initial screen flickering (as it seemed to be deciding on the best resolution) it has done it with no intervention from me at all.

So far so good and it seems quite easy to find things.
For some reason the screen is also much brighter (maybe a new driver is responsible).
I am just carrying on as before really - but with a clearer interface.

Its only day 1 so things could still go wrong - but I can't complain at the moment.

I upgraded this laptop to Windows 10 as soon as I bought it a year and a bit ago. It's been entirely trouble free. (Waits for everything to blow up having written that.)

probably it is brighter as the new os has a higher brightness setting by default in the power settings .

Glad to hear this, as I've been wondering whether or not to make the leap.

They haven't deleted all of your old programs and maybe you pay yearly subscriptions to use their apps? I fear that's what they'd truly like to be doing if they could....

Nope. I use Open Office for all that sort of stuff. They offer me a free trial of Office365 every so often but I can manage to ignore /dismiss it.

*All* the software makers are trying to move to a subscription model as far as I can see.

I've upgraded a number of older PCs running Windows 7 to 10 in part for far better security and also for performance and stability reasons. I've not seen any compatibility issues and so far everything has been very smooth. Usually I don't upgrade but start from fresh but with Windows 10 this hasn't been necessary.

One installation I can't upgrade is Windows 7 under BootCamp on a MacBook Air, which is due to Apple's short life time support for hardware in their OSes.

I'm not a fan. My new laptop last autumn came with Win 10 and I don't think I'll ever learn to love it. OH says it's because I've never been big into app-based phones/tablets.

Under Windows 10 I am using exactly the same set of programs in the same way as before. The Desktop looks more or less identical as before - with all the shortcuts I had before still there.
I assume that 10 is doing something smarter 'under the hood' - but I haven't noticed yet.

My desktop looked nothing like my old win 7 desktop - maybe because it's a factory install not an upgrade? It looked more like OH's win 8 desktop, but he changed a few things and I have normal looking desktop now. I still don't like the start button setup though, or the access to programs, again, it's just a bit 'appy' to make me entirely happy but I've learned to live with it!

Looks like my issue is related to the PC not the OS, I can't get it to install Mint even on a fresh HDD

Apps are what the young people use. Programs are for old people who are stuck with real words.

Size and price and one sounds trendy.

Apps mean that you don't have those arguments about whether it should be spelt programme (English) or program (American).

Upgraded all-but-one of my machines to Win 10 now (the old lappy keeps having hissy fits, so I've reverted to Win 7 every time). Seems okay to me, but I have issues with our main desktop as it has two accounts. First issue is that there's no way to stop Win 10 automatically opening the account of the last person that used it, which is a royal PITA as me and missus tend to alternate a fair bit.

Second thing is that the wife's account keeps having functionality issues. The start button stops working at random, some of the apps crash on opening, and other niggles arise that vary from an annoyance to making it impossible to use. I had the same issue when I upgraded our old machine from Win 7 to Win 10, but the current machine is a Win 10 new build. I've so far managed to fix each issue as it comes up, but it takes hours of online research and tinkering each time.
