In Gloucestershire, at least. Apparently very bad news if they spread, due to their fondness for killing honeybees

eek some of the far east hornets are really nasty critters ,apicide is one thing and to be disapproved of in the strongest terms (ops or extreme measures are in order) but having them chase you is nasty and getting caught can be quite serious as well as agonisingly painful.

"The Asian hornet is smaller than the UK's native hornet and poses no greater risk to human health than a bee. However, they do pose a risk to honey bees."

Eta: original source. Avoids using the headline KILLER HORNETS.

we might be thinking of different species ,im thinking of the malasian/ indonesian type .big, aggressive and packing a nasty sting.

very similar or the same as this

are those the sort after the local bees? or are the bee bashers different?

the big ones will kill bees but tis the way the act with people that gets them a bad reputation, i know a few folk who never want to meet them again.

One problem with the Asian hornets is that they are not that big so not as noticable perhaps as the British hornet. They are a bit bigger, very pretty and sound like a V bomber.

. . and I reckon our indigenous hornets will be virtually wiped out because of people reacting to this news and killing every hornet they see.

Ours tend to be fairly secretive and don't build such obvious nests as the Asian one seems to. We get a reasonable number in the woods, but we rarely know where their nests are, unless we see them coming out of a hole in a hollow tree.
