There was a stinkhorn in the yard yesterday, with most of the black spore bearing part gone, but there were still plenty of flies round it. Some of them, some of which were mating, were red bodies with longer black wings. I will try to find out what they are, but anyone any ideas please. I prefer to stick to flowers as they have the decency to stay put while you identify them.

I have done a bit of hunting through pictures, but can't find your red-bodied, black winged creatures. Are you certain they were flies?

No, but they looked like flies. The wings seemed to protrude beyond the body, and I don't think any beetle does that.

Thanks for trying to identify them Buzzy. I tried and failed too.
