I am after advice as to what is the maximum reasonable diameter of a tree that a tractor mounted flail hedge cutter will cut (flail).

This is the first time in 25 years that I am not capable of hand cutting my field hedge.

I have a guy lined up who does it professionally for the council, he has powerful enough gear.

But he is loathed to say how low he can get the hedge/trees. I can understand if its going to knacker his equipment.

So what is the maximum reasonable diameter of a tree that a tractor mounted flail hedge cutter will cut (flail).

For anybody who mentions it other trees are to be replanted where height is not an issue with the highway.

No thicker than 2in,and the thicker the growth the slower the speed,so will cost you more per hour.

iirc for bigger stuff there is a "harvester" type attachment for some machines that grabs the trunk and cuts it with a chain saw and then can be used to drag the severed parts out.

the EA contractors use them for trimming trees over dykes round here, their one can work stuff up to about 12" diameter and a couple of tons dead weight but they do need a biggish machine to drive and balance them, i have not seen a normal tractor sized version but such a thing may exist.

Dpack those harvesters are rather serious kit. They are becoming more common, but even the head costs lots of tens of thousands of pounds at least, then there is all the computer stuff to go with them.

Is there any reason why most of the hedge can't be flailed and any big trees either left or hand cut?

Most hedges here seem to be done with what looks like a circular saw on a tractor arm...deals with pretty serious stuff and doesn't leave so many bits around to cause tyre punctures...
