Editing a PDF in Word is pretty painful, doesn't work reliably.

Is LibreOffice any better with your docx?

Yes, but it's not a PDF to start with.

I didn't know that. Not sure I want to encourage the monopoly any more than I need to though.

The actual editing isn't a problem only the saving, and that would've worked if I'd used another format. Thinking about it, there was no purpose to mentioning Openoffice in the title. Sorry.
I was going to give them some feedback and tell them their form is crap, but it would be better to give them a constructive suggestion along with it.

If you edit your docx in open/libre office as a docx, you can then 'save as pdf' to send it back to them. That doesn't mess with the formatting.

tis just a matter of exporting it rather than saving/sending or sending it direct

similar things work with draw and gimp stuff as well if they get uppity when you need share them.

much as i like bill for giving the cash to good research some of microsofts apps and os are very clunky in real world use.

That is my fault for asking it badly in the first place.

The question is not of how to fill in the form, but of how best to create a better form, and what format to distribute it in.

I usually reformat the form and send it back to them as a *.docx, just as a courtesy, you understand. Not because I'm OCD.

They mentioned good IT skills, but I've already given up on the job: didn't meet some of their essential requirements.
Plus I don't want it on false pretences: best they know what kind of trouble I am before they hire me.

libre office

iirc there is an adobe free version of something for ms os that can even turn a screen shot into a writeable pdf
