Folks,

Being an urban dweller I still manage a bit of foraging either in municipal parks or the odd time like today.

Asking someone nearby if they were going to use the sour cherries that were growing in their tree. It's a young couple who recently had a baby and previously they had done jam but don't have the time this season for obvious reasons.

So I got 6 lbs of sour cherries for about 1/2 hour of effort. I'll be giving them some jams as a thank you gift and probably pick some more tomorrow for freezing both for them and us.

Looks good. I managed to buy some English cherries a couple of days ago for eating, and they were lovely, far better than the imported ones.

Yes they do I think the next batch will be just pitted with light syrup rather than jam. That way they can be used on yoghurt, ice cream, etc....

They are indeed, especially this year with no rain. I think we've harvested around 250kg this week.

We make a cherry sauce too haven't tried with sour cherries but with sweet:

2 kgs cherries
100g sugar

Cooked till soft then blended

We pasteurise in jam jars.

I've been picking Geans..Wild Cherries..they seem to be ripening well this year,although it is a race with the birds!

the local birds are usually faster than me.

round here they get up early and know exactly where to get breakfast

Folks,

Well when I was picking the sour cherries the birds were squaking at me and picking the cherries higher up in the tree at the same time....lol.

I did manage another 5 1/2 lbs at a 2nd picking and brought some jam and pitted cherries in syrup to the owners as a thank you.

We competed in the Alva Highland Games today (on our bikes) and afterwards found the cherry trees in the park laden with ripe cherries...very like the wild geans but dark and ripe. I'm surprised how many were left on the trees even higher up...lack of birds?
