I did cherish it, for many years, but the time had come for it to grow up and leave home.

I assumed that you'd cherished it. I was more thinking about it escaping from Nick's place. (I've got him pegged as a kind of Cruella de Ville but with sofas instead of Dalmations.)

I thought it was curtain poles that Nick stockpiles.

It's their upholstered covers, they make such nice coats.
