Don't worry Alison!

What are the thoughts on this practise ie buying in animals from farms, keeping them a short while & then slaughtering them to sell as meat? I always thought it was a thing that happened in intensive farming, but that turned out to be rather naive of me

I got the impression that nefarious practice was almost the norm

Cows shipped to Scotland at the last minute so the label "Scotch" could be applied and so on

And it used to happen to Scottish Blackface (hill) lambs - too light a carcass for the UK market, so shipped to France, grazed for 3 weeks, then slaughtered and sold as 'French' lamb.

Is that the inside of a livestock wagon ?
And the lambs were also shorn before loading so that more could be crammed in to the lorries. Lambswool, anyone ? (But I don't know what happened to it, so keep your jumpers on).

That may be, but I was surprised to learn that it does happen with small producers and rare, outdoor reared animals too Most people I would think assume that such pork was 'better', but I suppose it just emphasises the point that with food you should never assume, you need to ask, or preferably see for yourself.

Do you mean that the small producers sell on to larger ones, or that small producers buy from larger, more intensive producers and then pass it off as their own (outdoor reared / rare breed) ?

Both scenarios happen, I am sure, but I was referring to the latter.

There are also some retailers buying animals from small & medium sized producers at a commercial rate, and selling it on as something special- the poor customer is getting cheated because they think the extra goes to the producer (and the animal), the producer is being cheated because he is selling a better product at a commercial price and the only winner is the retailer feeding off the increased enthusiasm for the provenance of food.
