See this picture? It's a hinge. The strappy bit has a pin, top and bottom, and they sit in the metal 'cup' that screws to the frame.

I've lost some 'cups'. Do they have a proper name, and can anyone suggest a seller, please? I cannot find them, but I suspect that's because I don't know what I'm searching for.

Ta.

no idea what they are called ( sockets seems a fair bet for a name) but i would expect they come as part of a whole hinge set with the strap part .

the whole thing is called a strap hinge

a decent blacksmith could probably make something suitable but it would probably cost more than a whole mass produced hinge

I would call the gate hinge sockets, gate hinge sockets. Cast socket while looking at shed/gate hinges also throws up results.

It's the sort of thing that comes up in job losts of ironmongery for pennies but new ones cost a fair bit. If you have the time they might be picket up in shops that sell old stuff but are not as grand as antique shops.

wow ,im surprised ( and pleased for nick ) they can be bought without the strap part.

i spose the next issue is size of hole and will the bolt bit fit or wobble . i spose wobble could be sorted with a liner made out of a bit of suitable pipe and within reason they could be bored out a bit to accommodate the fatter bolt.

Thank you both.

And I found the missing ones in the garage. They were in a safe place. Obviously.

I shall look forward to tomorrows "name that mystery item" post, or perhaps we should have a "name that mystery item and does anyone know where I've stashed it" thread?

I think we need the latter. If I've got it, I don't need to know what it's called quite as often.
