i catch enough fish with bait . can i catch as many with artificial flys nymphs and lures ? . i would like not to use critters as bait but it works a treat , i have been studying the contents of trout stomachs and although earthworm is rare in autopsy , it is a deadly bait taking the biggest fish first and rarely missing on any day whatever the conditions of the water ,small fish are even better , catching bigger fish than worms and much more rapidly but this less the path i wish to follow than the worm way.i will use any means necessary to feed but it would be nice to do it with no harm caused to owt but dinner , any suggestions? my local trout contain many things small trout , snails , insects ( both aquatic and terrestial), odd things(invertibrates ) . the biggest often only eat tiny fish .so how should i proceed for next year ?the flys and lures i have tried do not seem to work cos if i follow them with bait then i get dinner although i have messed the river with the line , casting, retrieveing ,cursing etc but the virgin artifice fails to get fish .does anyone know any practical trout lures ?ones that work too well . like bait .

Mepps spinners (ideally number 4 or 3) will catch trout. Also minnow lures but they need a little working. The "secret" is to vary your retrieve speed and depth. Also, you can actually get artificial worms, and worm scented "spray" to use on artificial lures which can increase your success. A combination of the two- a spinner with a small rubber worm on the end will tempt predators, but I confess I've had more luck with perch and pike but then that's the kind of waters I'm fishing. Give it a go and let us know how you get on!

ta i will try spinner+ rubber worm and report back ,i am also going to try artificial fish .rubber worms fool pollack and they have far more time to decide than the local trout whose dinner slides past either at 2mph or20mph in water that is peat coloured in slack and far quicker in mud soup spate water , the combination of spinner and rubber worm may be ideal for the pools under the mill ponds , and in the races where the water is very 3d and fast .i have tried a spinner in one race and got a a hit but did not hold the fish that trout is my moby thingy , just like homer simpson and the cat fish ,next time i use the wire leader.ha.

Can you use small slugs? (TOTAL fishing ignoramus here - be gentle with your response.)

trout ,chubb and perch will all take slugs , the wee sticky black ones seem to work best .not as good as worms though (having only caught 1 undersized fish today while worming that sound daft )slugs are horrid to handle, chubb fishers often use tongs cos the slime sticks to everything it touches
they make good comedy eyebrows
