Well, I've got my new PC with a modest 160GB S-ATA drive. Strangely the software it came ready loaded for free takes up more room than everything on my 5 year old laptop.

Before I load too much I thought I should partition the disk. I thought 4 partitions would be ideal, on for XP, one for Linux, One for data and one spare. That'll be just under 40GB each. Do people still set up partitions at home or just stuff everything in one place? I assume this'll be easy under XP.

Why do you want to partition the XP section?

I generally partition into three, but my Linux box is another PC.

I do it in thirds.

C:\ XP and I limit the amount of other prgorams I install there.
d:\ Programming + some installed programs
e:\ backup, downloads, mp3s

I will need to partition the disk as I wish to install Linux. I would like to keep all my data in one place so it can be backed up easily. If there is no data on the OS partitions they can be wiped and re-installed whenever I'm in the mood.

I could get another hard disk but 160 Gig is more than enough. Tempted by a small USB removable one for data backups etc but I have a DVD-RW drive for that.
