How do I know when it's ready to harvest? I've never grown it before y'see ...

https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles0505/sweetcorn.asp According to the RHS. Pick it last minute before cooking, minutes affect how much sugar turn to starch. Once tasted straight from the plant, never again will shop bought be good enough.

Ours is almost embarrasing, the first few that went it are diddy, the next lot better, but you wnat to see the more experience allotmenteers' sweetcorn HUGE I tells yer.

They do tolerate (and thrive) in P & K rich soils, so plenty of muck dug in will do the trick. They also compete for the light, so blocks will grow better than rows. We had the first last week & although that was a little early, they were still very tasty.

generally when the tassles have gone completely brown means they're ready.

Thanks all. I shall be dodging the raindrops later on this evening then to check tassel colour and to pierce a kernel with a fingernail! I really hope it's ready ... I've got my hopes up now!

Had my first ever home grown sweetcorn yesterday. I thought people were exagerating about the taste difference - not the least! You don't need any butter, they're perfect by themselves - sweet and easy to eat.

dont know if you folks have had this one nmigrate here from another site but a trick here for you to keep the earwigs ouit of your corncobs , smear grease round the bottom of the stallks to about a 3 inches on the way up ,regs karl

We have a problem this year, for the first time: our corn are being nibbled on the plant by, I think, mice. Anyone got any cures?

You should be so lucky......we know when ours are ready because the SQUIRRELS start raiding them !

Thats what happened here, we had huge amounts, after the first couple of harvests the rest were totally decimated by the little buggers.
