I'm just adding my first XP PC to the network here, can I actually add an XP Home PC to a domain? It only seems to want to add itself to a workgroup...

Depends, if what you want to do would be useful, and logically should be simple; then you probably can't.

You did make a valid point though. I much preferred Win2K

It's OK, I've just found out I can't. But I can add a script file to my start up to create the shares I need on boot up which is all I need.

have I mentioned I hate XP, software designed to be crippleware, available in various levels with delibetate crippling so they can price bracket it.

In the next few weeks, I am planning a real effort to make by default desktop linux.

Once or twice.

If anyone can let me know what the simple differences between XP home and Pro are I'd be grateful. I'll probably get XP Pro with my new PC although I'll also make an effort to run with Linux as my main OS.

goofy user interface changes to make it nicer for idiots a dumbed down interface to something that is as complicated as it ever was, does no one any favours IMHO.

Some crippling of network facilities. Not sure of the details.
