Ok Guys a question that I would love your opinion on. How do you feel about roadkill?

This morning I passed a lovely deer - it was dead

and by the side of the road (next to some broken glass and a bit of bumper from the car that did the dirty). Now I travel this road to work every day so I know that guy is only a few hours old.....

Should I have stopped and put it in the boot?

Is there any common guidelines???

I don't know about any legal issues, I don't drive so it's unlikely to happen to me anyway. If I killed or could clearly tell that is how the animal died (hit by car in front etc) and knew it wasn't old then I would be happy it was safe to eat

there is still a law on the statute book for england that states you cannot pick up an accidentally killed pheasent, but the next man behind you can...

apparently these are also still on the statute:

Men over 14 are meant to carry out 2 hours of longbow practice a week supervised by the local clergy.

I'd have popped it in the boot quick. I did eat roadkill hare once - my oh hit it on the way out to work and she phoned me to say where I could find it.

I thought you also had to cry out 'In pain' - or something like it, 3 times...

I'd have picked it up without hesitation. We eat vast amounts of roadkilled pheasant every year but only rarely get a bumped deer. Just remember to go for the 'peel and select' approach rather than the 'gut and butcher' as mushy entrails can put you off that nights treat of panfried venison fillet slightly

ps if it is fresh enough still to do so bleed out the carcase as soon as poss for better flavour and storage . if the internal organs are really messed up it's best to stick with the muscle beware grit / glass / bone splinters eat well for free ,easy

I`ve done a few deer I`ve found at the road side,I always go on heat and smell.If it`s warm good!If there is no smell of poop even better. If not skin and see where the bruises are and trim the meat,saving the bloody and bruised for the dogs/ferrets. Get the meat chilled asap.
