Why was it decided in the first place to keep this section secret and to keep the majority of the forum members ignorant of its very existance ? |
We have a number of 'secret' forums here.
Theres one called 'staff room' where moderators get to discuss how the site works, where we work out what to do with things that need moderating, where we keep track of spam-bots that come and register with the site, etc. Thats viewable by the whole modding team.
Theres one called 'publishing' where articles for review are posted; most of the articles that make it to the front page go through there to get knocked into shape. Thats viewable by anyone who is commonly involved in the editing and publising of those articles.
So we have fora like that where, for purely dull, site admin matters we have restricted acces. Trust me, they're dull, but they're necessary.
This forum was originally a place where people who were advertisers here (they've applied to get their ad accepted here and been accepted) could talk about issues arising from that; what they wanted from being advertisers here, what their goals were. But we also used to get questions here that didn't need to be kept out of the public eye, and we really weren't getting topics that needed to be kept secret. And as we've got a whole load of small traders here other than those who already advertise on the site, there was nothing to be gained from leaving this forum as it was, it could just as well be open to all.

How were the members selected for membership to it ?

People who had been accepted by our vetting group to advertise (for free - we do not get any money for the ads) on the site.

I'm sure that in bringing these questions up that I'm voicing concerns that other people have .
Having looked at the dates of the threads , its obviously been around for some considerable time.
I'm very pleased that its been made available to the full membership , but its appearance has left me with a bit of an us and them feeling ! |
Thats one of the very good reasons to make this a public forum rather than a private one; when theres a good reason to keep something private ('staff room' for example) thats one thing, but it was apparent that we didn't have to keep this one private, so that was changed. |
