Went to the farmers market on Sunday and couldn't get any pidgeon from any of the usual stalls. They claimed the beech mast has been so good this year that the pidgeons are stuffing themselves in the woods and not coming out into the fields. Anybody else noticed this or were they just pulling my leg?

Dunno. There are loads of pigeons round here and the beech mast is pretty much all gone now anyway. Obviously seasons are different for you lot up on the tundra though.

I saw this on another site ( GWBT )and thought of you "Went to the game dealers today to drop off some rabbit & pheasant, usual cup of tea and a chat, then he drops one on me, pigeon is going for 2-3 times the price of partridge at present. Fell off my seat almost, apparently none been shot in nearly 3 weeks around Warks/Northants. Partridge 50p Pigeon �1-1.5"

It's a shame you can't shoot them purely for the pot then. Round here we have a very large beech trees over the roads and for there are often quite a few very plump woodies milling about eating. So plump I have wondered if I could catch one... This morning I saw a flock of 50 or so fly over so they are moving about a bit.

What are the rules for shooting what and where? I have Three woodies camping at the bottom of my garden in an old Xmas tree. I was going to despatch one as soon as my oven was fitted next week.

Woodpigeon come under the general license and as such we should show that we have tried all other methods to deter them...... and we have for years now. Shooting in your garden............a whole new subject

Woodies all around here, but I am in the middle of nowhere. The beach mast is exceptionally good this year as is just about everything else. A good layer of snow and they will come out ...
