How much did it cost to get killed and butchered?

I thought it was good value too - not having to go to an abattoir (of which there are none near us - nearest is about 40 miles away) plus the stress on the animals (and us too!)

I didn't think there were any mobile slaughtermen left, did he take all the gunk with him?

Great I bet your really looking forward to eating the meat. We felt a bit guilty when we had our first pigs butcherd but soon got over it when we tasted the first couple of chops, yummy, how handy is that to have the slaughter man come to you, at least youll be sure of getting your own animal back.

Would keep quiet about that as its not legal (you could kill it your self but not some one else unless its on licenced premises which I assume you dont have). Bet the meat was not stamped with a heath mark?

I thought it was legal as long as none of the meat is sold. We certainly have a chap here who does the same thing.

As far as Ive seen its legal to have your animals killed on the holding by a licensed person and then either you or that person can cut the meat up, if its for your own consumption.

Nope. Its ilegal for a liceneced slaughter person to kill on premises not also licenced. As he is supplying you with a different thing than suppied to him (you gave hima live animal he supplied you with a carcus) he is "supplying" you with illegaly killed meat (he was not the owner on his own premises). The only exemption is for the owner to kill his own.
