Guys,
As a very new grower & gardener I am after any plants / cuttings / seeds (?) etc that I can have a go with!

Ideally something easy to grow and useful like rhubarb, strawberries, Gooseberries.
I don't think at this stage I have anything useful to swap but obviously would pay for anything and it's postage.
Any ideas / tips on the best thigs to try and best places to buy this stuff would also be useful as garden centres look to be very limited and expensive!

There are some tremendous seed/plant bargains to be had on ebay. Failing that, get a book on taking cuttings, a pot of rooting powder, some good compost, and raid your friends and neighbours gardens

I would definately try herbs. If you cannot get your hands on a local supply then things like mint and horseraddish roots will easily survive the post. (Take care with planting these as they may take over in good soil!) I would also have thought cuttings of plants like Thyme, Sage and Rosemary would make it.

Ahhh but then if I am sucessful growing herbs then that means I will have to learn to cook too!!! Shock, horror! Seeds are great if they can be grown like plants... I have been doing my own bedding plants in my greenhouse for quite a few years now fairly sucessfully.
I did have a look on e-bay actually but there was so many it was all rather confusing. I think I need to sit here with a book on my lap when I look next time!
Do you think the seeds you see in supermarkets quite chep are any good or would you suggest I stick to 'makes' for vegetables?

If you're going for brands avoid Thompson & Morgan, none of us here have done well with their stuff. My two favourite seed (& plant) nurseries are: www.simpsonsseeds.co.uk www.realseeds.co.uk Not just excellent service but really nice people too.

I've never had much of a prblem with the supermarket seeds , I would guess a 80%- 90% success which I feel is ok but I also take loads of cuttings from things ( bad habit of trying to root anything I prune off, If they take bonus if they dont nothing lost

) and the first thing I do in a friends garden is look to see if there is anything I like the look of.
P.S. if anyone wants some scented leaf pelergoniums let me know, I take cuttings every year and have 5 varieties so if anyone wants....
