Just taken delivery of our sheep - a dozen hoggets, Suffolk/Texel crosses destined for the table eventually - and half of them are in lamb after running with a Charolais ram.
Someone told me Charolais crosses can be awkward to deliver because they tend to have wide heads. Anyone else confirm this?
And am I right in thinking that crosses tend to be easier lambers anyway, with their hybrid vigour making them hardier than the high-maintenance pure-bred sheep? I ask because when these beasts do sprog, I'm keen to have it happen al fresco if at all possible rather than build a lambing shed. Looking at the bags on 'em, we've maybe three or four weeks to go, so the worst of the winter shold have passed.
