Made it this weekend, and was surprised how easy it was. I see what you mean about a little goes a long way, but I made half a batch (becase thats how much almond oil I had left) and I suspect it won't last long - it's about half a chinese takeaway tubful!

Thanks nettie, its great - I can stop buying ridiculously expensive stuff from the body shop now. I made it with caldendula and camomile oils and used camomile tea instead of water. Next time I might make it more scented, with orange flower water or lavender water

It says in the article that adding more water will make it thicker? That seems different to most things - is it some chemical jiggery pokery I don't want to know about?

I also made toner from a book, from a table spoon of vodka, two of which hazel and a cup of the remaining camomile tea, and 4 drops of camomile and calendula oil. I've bunged it in a kilner jar with a packet of cotton waxing strips from the bodyshop to replace those horrifyingly wastful disposable clensing wipes I was using. There's probably a more convinient container somewhere, but it seems to have worked well. I'll dilute the tea if I do this again, as it smells quite strong, but I might play with the flavours instead. There's also no getting away from the fact that it looks like a specimen jar - oh well!

The toner sounds like a great idea, WW. Putting water in the cream makes it thicker and more gooey (and, I think, harder to work in to your skin), less makes the mixture more oily, like a body butter. The beeswax sort of emulsifies it all together, if that makes sense.

Hi Nettie, thanks for a wonderful article about something I don't think many people would attempt without coddling (like me). I'm desperate to try this out - bought my beeswax already - but have couple of questions if you don't mind.

Can you use any bowl for making it in - will you be able to use the same bowl to make food in and eat out of afterwards or should it be kept specially for this kind of thing?

The almond and coconut oil - can you substitute other oils for these? I was thinking maybe sunflower or olive? And do you have to have a mix of two oils or can you use all one oil?

Are glass jars okay to keep it in (ie old jam jars) and is dishwasher-washed sterilised enough?

That's fantastic nettie. I decided yesterday that I'll start thinking about Christmas presents for people in September but you've saved me a job now as I can leave it much later and make them some luxurious homemade body cream a couple of weeks before

Hi girls, you can use any bowl to make it in, as nothing in there is toxic, although I would advise against plastic as it will retain the smell of the essentail oils.

As to swopping the oils, I guess you could try sunflower or groundnut, and you could use 100% of any of them except the coconut, because it is solid at room temperature and will make your cream more the consistency of styling wax! I do like the coconut oil best though as it is really light and blends easily into the skin. I personally wouldn't use olive oil as it makes a much heavier cream.

A good tip if you are going to make creams for presents is to make a small batch soon, for your own use, then you know what to expect and can advice the recipients of your gift if it turns out to need any special tips (eg, one recipe of mine lasts really well, but has to be kept in the fridge, another is fine at room temperature, another makes great foot masks and so on) If you have made and used one batch yourself you can be confident that you know what to expect when you do the batch for presents- makes it look even more amazing and professional

Great idea Sally If you did it now it would give you time to experiment with variations, e.g increasing the proportion of the wax so you could make scented hair wax or lip balm.

I make lip balm already and I gave some to a friend of mine for his birthday. Everyone who walked past the table where his presents up picked it up and said 'What's this?' He said, 'Lip balm', they said' Really?' and looked confused - every bleedin one of them

I got more and more cross until when people picked it up I was going, 'It's *&^%$ï¿½" lip balm, wanna make something of it?!'
