stumbled upon a collecting point for "paper based food containers" ie soup cartons, juice boxes etc.

I'm quite surprised (pleasantly) that these can be recycled economically......might phone the council and pester them for details.

Anyone know anything about this?

I thought they needed *fine* shredding, then composting.

But it seems that they can be repulped into other products

You can post your old packs to Tetrapak who will recycle them. The address is somewhere on their website.

Better still, don't buy stuff that comes in tetrapaks .
