And the quickest way to turn a 3.5mb picture into one I can post here would be....?

I dunno on your system, but my Kodak Easyshare software has various options when you "save as" and you can specify the size there.

Marigold, for your Mac, the easiest possible thing is Pixer.
https://www.1802.it/pixer.php

Drag the photo to the pixer icon. It opens a little window. Type in the number of dots you want across the image (640 or 800 is nice for screen/web viewing, 170 for an avatar). Click 'OK'. It saves a *copy* of your picture at that resolution, with a filename including your chosen number.
Mac-simple.
Yet it has other tricks too!

Thanks dougal - I'll check that out, but the Save As option works fine and I assume most other digital camera software has a similar feature, so it's quick and easy .

Open it in paint

resize / skew

change the horizontal & vertical from 100% to a lower figure. I use 20% in both on about 1mb files so 10% should do it.

Save (save as) with new name & job done

Cheap & easy with software on every windows pc as standard.

Just noticed - Pixer needs 10.4 last I heard you were on 10.3.... Ooops

It is a standard function of most image-editing software, but Pixer is tiny, instant and SO simple if that's about all you want to do...

Yup, still on Panther here - don't want to upgrade until I go the whole hog and buy a new computer which may be some time... Thanks for noticing before I went off investigating

In Windows Vista - double-click the image, select the Email option, and choose from a range of sizes from small to large etc. It resizes it for you and attaches it to your email ready to send. Since in this case you don't actually want to email it, just right-click the resulting file and save it to post it here.

I use GoldBerg on my Macs - works on Panther (PPC) and Tiger (Intel). So simple, so intuitive.
