Radio 4 Tuesday 11:00 Missing Elms
The elm, the quintessential British tree, was stricken by Dutch Elm Disease 30 years ago and largely erased from the landscape. Can it return, and how has Brighton succeeded in protecting the species?

I don't think we're too far from the commercial introduction of a resistant elm, I'm sure I read somewhere that's already planted in various places and will be available from nurseries next year. maybe the programme will have more info

We lost 8 in our semi detatched garden. My dad felled them over a long weekend, into the veg plot, and the bonfire lasted about two weeks.

funny the things you remember, seeing I was only about 7.

Brighton and Hove have retained their Elm trees by the clearance of any trees across the south downs for a wide area. Then establishing incinaration points where all wood and or timber must be burnt so as not to have infested wood/timber brought back into the 'safe' area.

Can sometimes be treated but this has had limited success so far - look forward to finding out more.
