Sorry to start a new one but i need help ID - ing quickly, my last haul shrivelled before I had a chance to identify them. Sadly my friend with the Phillips book has gone away for a few days. (I really must get my own copy!)
I found these at the edge of a field, growing in a line at the foot of some conifers; some of them were growing like twins from the same spot and were sort of squished together. They smell musty, like old library books, and on cutting them there is no sign of maggots - the flesh is very dense - and immediately after cutting they smell very faintly of watermelon for a short while! They are a bit brown because my friend accidentally singed them with a blow torch while kiling weeds
They look scarily like some deadly poisonous ones i picked late last summer (I think they were destroying angels) but of course these are much earlier in the year.
Am I about to have the taste sensation of the Spring or are these to be consigned to the dustbin?
Exactly the same as mine, which caused no tummy probs, although my vision is blurred by zig zagging back and forth so much on my screen to take in the enormity of your piccie!
