Yeah, you're right. I got the manager to apologise properly now (you know, say 'sorry, I was wrong' rather than 'I regret that you left us with the impression that...'), and I know now that they're looking to change a few procedures... I'll call it a day.

Just picked up on your thread - I worked for them once, it only lasted about a week!
I would get put onto a 'spare' desk and in one particular desk I found at least 4 letters to them from people offering payment for debts they had incurred. These letters were at least 1 month old. W***ers. People trying to get themselves out of debt and the bank ignoring their effort and slapping on more interest.

I was accused of being computer illiterate (had just written a database for the agency I was working for) and I walked out!

This was at least 5 years ago and it still boils my blood!

Are any of the others any better (and by the way, cracking icon there!)?

I have never worked in a bank again to find out as an insider!
I have banked with HSBC for years and find them to be really good. Have let me have a free over draught if I can't cover a direct debit payment for a day or so. They have worked out for me.

Robin is almost hand tame now and ambushes me when I'm digging. I thought he needed a bit of fame!

Cab,

I bank with NatWest and I have had similar my experience is that its best to try and ignore the telephone service and try to befriend someone at a branch in what ever way possible....

ALSO - they DO have a GOOD internet option which I have been using for the last 3-4 years.... as it bypasses the Flat Liners that you often speak to... I find it does pretty much all I need.

God help us when they decide to ship their call centres to India...

I'm a fiercely anti racist, but I find it hard to believe a bank when the person at the end of the telephone line in India/Bangladesh etc lies to me by saying their name is Tim.....

Richy, I thought that my branch were on-side till this blow up. And I'd love to bank online if their website liked Mac OS9, but it seems to sulk an awful lot

Names don't bother me, we had a couple of Japanese students for christmas dinner (made a change from Turkey) and they used anglicised names for politeness.

I do struggle though with anyone on a call line, whether they are from Bombay or Glasgow with an accent I can't understand

But don't you think the prinicipal of someone lying about their name (from the off) even if it is to make life easier is a little dishonest?

I'd be happier with them using their own names, but that said some call centres here in the UK use pseudonyms. As do some websites; it's a little known fact that Jonnyboy likes to be called Susan.

Well, when you look like that, you might as well go with it.

Tons of call centres I've had the misery to deal with won't even give you a full name or anything to identify the person you spoke to, not even a call reference. Great, isn't it - I sit there talking to someone who knows my bank details, how much I get paid, credit card number, address, DOB, NI, you name it - probably even my working hours - and they won't even give me the faintest detail about themselves for my own reference.

It's not like I'm going to track them down and turn their Labrador in to stew just for being rude to me. I've hardly ever done that, and it's never been proven anyway.

Well, as the site was down for a while, I thought I'd tidy a few things up,one of which was make a simple call to my bank (Natwest)

I had to repeat the same information SEVEN times, was put through to the wrong department TWICE and was disconnected/cutoff TWICE.

Guess I'm looking for a new bank.....

Smile (for ethicallyness with a halfway decent account) or First Direct (for better phone service and free money when you join - I've given a friend a voucher from the Sunday paper for 50 when you join ). Or have a look at the articles on MSE for other ones and see which suits you best.

the only banks that live up to my ethics are

Unity Trust Bank
Triodos Bank
Ecology Building Society
Smile
and the Co-op (but they are so crap, and i was once charged 200 for going 1.00 overdrawn, so i wont use them)

EVERY other bank invests in stuff i dont want my money used for...

and the building societies are investing in human-sized rabbit hutches they call houses...

Why don't you send the marketing director of your bank a link to this forum and set up a blog detailing your communication & resulting hassle. You can usually get the names of the directors from the website, annual report - or even just searching on the Web.

Call centre people & supervisors are a waste of time.

I had the misfortune to get a bill from a debt collection firm for 120, resulting from allegedly unpaid NTL line rental three years previously, when I was at uni.

NTL were awful, the call centre people very unhelpful, including the supervisor. I knew this debt wasn't valid (neither myself or NTL knew where it came from) and that NTL had forwarded a false debt. Eventually went to Citizen's Advice, where a lovely lady spent 3 hours on the phone to NTL on my behalf, was passed between 7 people - eventually resolving that I wasn't liable for this debt! It shouldn't be that difficult!
