OK I have just been interviewed about my lifestyle choices with House Beautiful magazine (not that my house is beautiful or even clean LOL) thanks to Tahir and Bugs, who put the journalist and myself in touch. It hopefully will talk about shopping habits, foraging, growing veg, just generally leading a more eco friendly existence, and of course giving Downsizer a plug

Not till April. I hope they don't want to take a pic of my veggie patch, all I've got is a few sorry looking leeks, some Swiss chard and some rather chewed cabbages at the mo

Have you had any photos yet? I'll never forget the Independent photographer with all her kit doing a photo shoot of our 3 hens.

LOL Alison!!!!

Photos to follow, Treacodactyl.....they said they were going to photograph me at the farmer's market, and then putting my food away. Bear in mind this is House Beautiful and my kitchen is a horrid '80's throwback complete with worn lino and nasty peach paintwork!!!

That's fantastic Nettie - didn't realise you'd done the interview already!

Wouldn't worry about the kitchen at all - 80s is probably the new look for April anyway

(PS sorry I didn't reply to your last PM, will be doing tomorrow!)

It's soooo exciting - and thanks for attempting the plug for Downsizer. That means we've got to keep things lively for the next 5 months!

Well hopefully we are picking up speed a little each day and in a while lively won't be an issue. We got quite a few search engine hits yesterday for example, something that is picking up speed in fits and starts. For a month old site, we have made incredible progress and it is all these efforts at publicity from so many diffferent people that is making it happen So if anyone else out there can see a publicity angle, then please try it, remember newspapers and magazines are actually struggling to find stories! they actually do want to know.

Not where I come from, they wait for the stories to drop on their desks (complacent and boring Essex Chronicle - who I work for). We need to put the stuff in front of them.

Nettie's dead right. Local newspapers in particular are often guilty of laziness, which makes them ripe for careful exploitation. All too often they're run on a shoestring budget with a largely trainee staff who don't have the time or the contacts to go out and find out what's happening, so they depend on the press release and the weekly police and fire checks to fill the pages.
All of which means that if you've got something to say, tell them. Read the paper to get a feel for the sort of local angles that ring the right bells, then send in a pithy press release about what you're doing that rings those bells. Keep it short and pithy (if you can't get their interest in 250 words, don't bother), include a couple of decent quotes and contact details and then follow up with a phone call to the newsdesk early in the week and you stand a good chance of getting your story in. And remember, people stories and pictures will always stand more chance than issue stories and pictures, so keep it personal.

Me? Like Catholicism, journalism's something I gave up for Lent some years back. I'll do you a how-to guide to press releases in the next day or so when the mixer's done the next batch of lime plaster. Meanwhile, it's back to being the Limestone Cowboy...
