I've got an allotment that's badly in need of a shed to keep me and my tools safe and warm through the winter. I was watching the BBC programme 'Guerilla Homes', and saw the amazing eco-home that someone had built using a celtic roundhouse as a templete. It got me thinking 'I could do that'.
Does anyone know the laws of what constitutes a shed, and if I'd be able to get away with it on an allotment site? One of the main messages from 'Guerilla Homes' was do it first, then hide until you're told it's illegal, so I don't want to ask the allotment association as I'm sure there'll be alot of chin scratching and sharp intakes of breath.

Can you be a bit more specific about what you mean by 'celtic roundhouse'? Are we talking a ring of posts, wattle and daub with thatch roof?

This is a round shed type building near me. If you contacted the alternative technology centre they would be able to let you know about planning permission and whether or not they needed it.
Beautiful building isn't it, I walked past it yesterday and its really blended in to its surroundings now (I think its been there 2 or 3 years).

That is looking nice now, Nora, isn't it. We left HB just after the main structure had gone up and they had started work on the garden. It must have really transformed that stretch of the canal.

Yes Judith, it does look good. That old derelict mill opposite has been 'improved' into luxury apartments so its all been looking like the building site that it has been. All looking very civilized now though.

Specifically, what I want is a small building with a turf roof made from reclaimed (ie - free) materials, round, something that looks like it's grown out of the earth and free of anything environmentally damaging. Whattle and daub is probably the way to go. My concern is that it'll look bulkier than a shed, so may attract attention of planners and bureaucrats.

nora. Thanks for the link. It's a beautiful house, on a much bigger scale than what I'm intending. I'll try and get to Rochdale for a peek sometime.

Monkeychad-don't go to Rochdale!! it's in Hebden Bridge down by the (Rochdale) canal in the centre. Maybe you could scale it down a bit to make your shed?
