We usually go on what they feel like when we pick them up. Anytime from about 24 weeks on really. Other people may do it differently though.

Definately weight and look.

Are they a meat bird, or some home bred ones. OUr homebred ones we put into a smaller area for the last couple of weeks, so they don't run all their weight off.

As the other posters have said - go by what they look like or how desperate you are for some chicken!
Home-grown birds we kill at between 16 and 20 weeks, while the bought-in broilers go into the freezer at 12 - 14 weeks. With the broilers, any longer than that they will be more like small turkeys!

We raise meat chickens (pullets) as they have less trouble with heart attacks which can be a problem with cockerals. We find with ours that they must be slaughtered at 10 weeks as by this time their legs are giving out & even if we keep them longer they don't seem to gain any more weight. By this time they usually weigh approx. 5-7 pounds. Good roasting chickens but I don't know the bred as we buy them as day olds.
