We're lucky to get half a dozen eggs a week right now, we usually get about 10 - 12 a day Have anyone elses chickens dropped off the egg production?

You're lucky you're getting any! Out of our three hens, two have gone broody and the other's given up laying. Then they will start moulting, then the nights draw in. What breed are yours? Ours are Sussex, two buff and a speckled, and are not regarded as the most prolific layers but a good all rounder (i.e. eggs, meat and mothering instincts).

At our allotments there are three other guys who keep hens, all have gone off lay. Out of our 6 we are getting 3 eggs a day, which is a bit better than the others are getting.

Thanks, Treacodactyl, for reminding me of the dark nights looming - it will be finish work, rush to the field to see Jas and then dash round the allotments to see the girls and tuck them up for the night. One good thing, jobs will be all done by 5 p.m.

Ahh that's okay then They're Black Rocks, Welsummers and Cornish Game. I'm sure I remember having an excess of eggs this time last year and freezing some for winter (whereupon the black rocks decided to lay right through )

I'm getting between 2 and 4 per day from my motley crew of 5 layers - which is more than enough. I must freeze some before they stop. This time last year we had a really bad mite infestation, and they practically stopped laying altogether. Painting the inside of the house really seems to have kept the mites at bay this year.

Hmmm mites - I hadn't thought of that. My husband says it's juts the time of year but why would chickens stop laying at this time of year? None of them are broody.

Too much heat can put them off laying...but again I don't think that's a problem at the moment. How old are they, have they moulted yet? Perhaps they could be gearing up for that?

My cockerel seems to be starting his moult - I keep finding tail feathers all over the place. Doesn't seem to put him off his work much, though

i got only 3 eggs yesterday and 1 was cracked on the floor. today i didnt even get 1 from my 5 laying hens .

thank god for that i thought mine were the only ones not laying glad i read this i started to notice mine were dropping of last week till i saw one of my marrens coming out from under a hedge of thorns how she ever got under ther god only knows i found over 2 doz eggs but now they really have gone of laying how long does this last

I am not sure what my lot are doing this year either but I am blaming our lack of eggs on the blooming mites too! I think we finally got rid of them so was wondering how long it would take for the girls to get back to normal...
We have 10 chickens (3 bantam light sussex, 4 bantam 'roadrunners' (I think they are called!) and 3 full size Wyandottes.
To be honest I have no idea who lays and who doesn't as I never catch then 'at it' so to speak!

One of our ex-battery hens, Jo-Hen, was a bit bald when we got her, her feathers are all in now but for weeks she has been laying eggs which are paper thin. Ta-da, yesterday and today she has given us the most loveliest of eggs (bless the girl!). We are very proud of her.

ive got 13 laying hens but they have gone into the moult now which is a bit strange i think but out of the 13 layers i only get 3 eggs at the moment if im luky where as i used to get between 9 and 12. dus anyone no y my hens are moulting during the summer?
