Back to the discussion as such: we have quite a few Brits living and working here. Many are married to local people. It seems they are doing OK, but there are complaints about the climate and the price of beer.

Quite a few Norwegians leave for warmer shores once they retire. Then work is not an option. We are infamously not learning Spanish, Italian and French, however. Shame really, but when people are past 60 years they seem to be happy with what they know. Learning a different language at that age is difficult.

I have lived for some time in South Africa and I cannot ever see myself living there again. I'll brave the rain, wind and dark winters here with ease, just to be feeling safe in my own home. One day of sunshine here makes up for a lot of dismal winter days

I lived there for half a year when I was 15

Hard to learn the language when everyone speaks flawless english!

Wouldn't it be fun to be properly challenged and move somewhere where two languages are spoken - e.g. N/NW Spain - Basque and Spanish, or NE Spain - Catalan and Spanish. With a view to becoming fluent in both of course A.

I moved to New Zealand in 1989 with the expectation of starting a business with some friends. Sadly it all went pear-shaped and I had to come back to the UK but I absolutely loved NZ - I was there for five months - and would have stayed on if I could. The countryside is fabulous, the scenery is amazing, the beaches are empty, the houses are cheap and the people are bearable. (I'm not a people person!). Don't know what it's like now, of course, but has to be worth consideration. Sadly I'm "too old" for NZ now - unless I win the lottery

I've lived in Canada for 3 years now and absolutely love it, I dearly love the UK, but no way could afford back home what I have here

The one that is left is in Lofoten. Wonderful place in summer and as out-of-this-world as anything you ever saw. Far north.
